Heaven! I'm in Heaven ...

We recently discovered Almond Blossom Cafe in Flagler Beach, near the Post Office. Although it's not in our local area, the visit was worth every minute and every bite - and not too many pennies, either.

Our healthy eating style has evolved to the penultimate diet - the vegan diet. This restaurant offers the ultimate in healthy eating - the raw diet. This means that no milk, cheese, meat, fish, or seafood are served there. We were pleased to learn that one of the staff members has lost over 100 lbs on this diet, and we were interested to learn if it was possible to make this diet interesting. We were pleasantly surprised.

The restaurant was warm inside, compare to the cool, evening breeze. Live guitar music greeted us, as did a waitress with a friendly welcome and invite to sit wherever we wanted. Not that it was empty; one-fourth of the tables were occupied. Three-fourths of the tables were occupied by the time we left. The decor was a pleasant combination of modern, cozy, and fun, with a pleasing combination of wood, glass, tile, and plants.

The menu states that everything is made with LOVE, and it showed in the attitudes of the staff, and the care of the food.

We started our meals with Teeccino (tee-Chee-no), an herbal coffee-style beverage served warm. We were fortunate that day to have one with hazelnut flavor (tasted sweet when drunk "black") and one with mocha flavor, to which she added fresh, home-made almond milk. Neither had the bitter taste associated with coffee.

We read the menu, of course, but were won over by the day's specials. He had Portobello Panini, where avocado and tomato slices, sprouts, and other veggies were layered between portobello slices. Whatever was in it was tasty enough to not need an additional sauce. His side salad was on the same plate.

She had a couscous style dish made with sprouted quinoa (Kee-nwa), cilantro, wild rice, orange bits, raisins, pecans, and maybe onions. This was beautifully served in two round "rice cake" shapes on baby spinach rosettes with a line of sliced apple and artistically placed strips of young coconut meat, so her side salad had its own plate. The side salads had slightly more sprouts than wild greens, but what a variety of sprouts! The ranch style dressing was creamy with a greenish tint, but no bitter taste.

The meal was so tasty and filling, we were full to the "just right" point. Half the couscous came home with us. We figured we could try dessert some other time.

Our only regret is that we were unable to try everything on the regular menu. Who knew that raw foods could taste this good?
